Liesel against her past
Right now Liesel is dealing with demons from her past: the death of her brother and the separation from her mother. She’s carrying this baggage to her new situation, and we see her struggles in her actions, such as not wanting to leave the car when it arrives at the Hubermanns. Exiting the car means taking a step towards her new life and separating herself from her mother and brother permanently. She also does not want to take a bath because the dirt is another connection to her mother and brother. Zusak writes, “Liesel, naturally, was bathed in anxiety” about her new mother making her bathe (33). Once she washes any dirt and blood away, she is making a clean start, without her family. She might see it as a rejection of them. |
